This course examines the theory, policy, and design related to urban sustainability, with a focus on the impact of rapid urbanization on both the environment and society. The goal of the course is to analyze and explore different approaches and methodologies within the field of sustainable urban development, through the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable planning. The course draws knowledge and tools from fields such as environmental science, urban planning, engineering as well as social science. It enhances students’ ability to analyze and evaluate urban development strategies based on local conditions and needs, and to assess design proposals that promote urban sustainability.

Special emphasis is placed on understanding the social, economic, environmental, and institutional factors that influence planning, as well as the importance of involving stakeholders at all stages of the planning process. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the course equips students with the necessary tools to address contemporary sustainability challenges, linking local planning with the broader goals of sustainable development on a global scale.
