Ecological Engineering, Energy and Climate Change

The “Ecological Engineering – Energy & Climate Change” track of the Master’s Programme in Planetary Environmental Change, Management & Technology has been offered since the academic year 2020–2021, and it is taught exclusively in Greek. Its aim is to equip graduates with the capacity to apply relevant technologies and to independently advance science, research, and innovation. Graduates are also trained to remain productive in a rapidly evolving scientific and technological environment.
(Regulation references: Government Gazettes: 1371/B/14.04.2020, 4503/B/13.07.2023, 3429/B/14.06.2024).

The Programme’s goals are achieved through the completion of structured postgraduate courses aligned with international academic standards. These courses provide both depth and the necessary breadth in the scientific and technical foundation expected of a holder of a Master’s Degree.

Studies in this track combine in-person attendance (20%) with distance learning (80%) during the first and second semesters.

More information about the structure and organization of the studies can be found in the Study Guide.

Useful Information

The focus of this track is the postgraduate specialization of scientists in topics related to Ecological/Environmental Engineering, as well as Energy Management and Low-Carbon Technologies within the context of Climate Change.

This track aims, through the study and understanding of biological, ecological, and physicochemical processes of the environment and their applications in Ecological Engineering, Energy Management, and Climate Change mitigation, to:

  • Train scientific personnel with a comprehensive understanding of environmental processes.

  • Advance knowledge of the physical and anthropogenic parameters of the Greek terrestrial and aquatic environment, local expertise in resource and environmental quality management, and promote the application of this knowledge toward the sustainable use of the country’s natural resources.

  • Deepen the understanding of the design, construction, and operational principles of systems based on the core concepts of Ecological and Environmental Engineering.

  • Strengthen the study of energy systems during the transition to low-carbon technologies and renewable energy sources, aligned with the principles and goals of sustainable development as outlined by the United Nations (SDGs, 2030 Agenda)—namely, access to clean and affordable energy, increased energy efficiency, and support for infrastructure investments in clean energy.

  • Enhance understanding of climate change, its impacts, as well as greenhouse gas emission mitigation, and promote the development of renewable energy.

  • Reinforce the multi-dimensional socio-economic role of the University of the Aegean in the island region where it operates, in alignment with its founding mission and objectives.

The curriculum of the Direction includes three (3) teaching semesters (winter – spring – winter). Attendance of the courses is mandatory and the language of instruction is Greek and English. In order to obtain the M.Sc. Diploma, students are required to attend ten (10) courses during the first two semesters of study. The total number of Credit Units (ECTS) required to obtain the M.Sc. diploma is ninety (90)

All courses are semester-long and for their completion, they include at least ten (10) education and learning units (including lectures, theoretical presentations, laboratory activities, participation in field research, etc.) and correspond to six (6) credit units (ECTS). The preparation of the M.Sc.’s thesis lasts at least one (1) academic semester and corresponds to thirty (30) credit units (ECTS). The total workload required of each master’s student to obtain the M.Sc. ranges between 2,250-2,700 hours (90 ECTS x 25-30 hours/ECTS).

Teaching is implemented in a blended learning environment with standard combined forms of education, which include: [a] a five-day cycle of intensive lectures held at the Department’s headquarters at the beginning of each academic semester (October, February, July), [b] synchronous and asynchronous e-learning processes, utilizing a relevant platform, which support the educational process during all weeks of study of the first two academic semesters.

Lectures are held in the afternoon and attendance at classes and participation in all kinds of educational activities, such as assignments, exercises, etc., is mandatory. During the third semester, students undertake only the preparation of their thesis. The languages of instruction are Greek and English.

Successful completion of the M.Sc. requires 90 ECTs in tandem with participating in all relevent educational and research activities, as described in the M.Sc.’s Studies Regulation. Participating in all M.Sc.’s activities is obligatory. The M.Sc. courses are as follows:
