Gkalipidou E., Deligiannis M., Gatidou G., Knight E.R., Allan I.J., Kostakis M.G., Gerokonstantis D.T., Arvaniti O.S., Thomaidis N.S., Vyrides I., Fountoulakis M.S., Stasinakis A.S. (2025) Impact of granular activated carbon, voltage application and sewage sludge pretreatment on mesophilic anaerobic digestion performance and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances removal. Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering 13, 117933.

Highlights

  • Effect of GAC, voltage application and sludge pretreatment in AD and PFAS removal.
  • Sludge pretreatment increased dCOD and slightly affected PFAS distribution.
  • No effect of voltage application and sludge pretreatment on PFAS removal.
  • GAC addition resulted to moderate total PFAS removal in AD; up to 76 % for PFOA.
  • Higher abundance of DefluviicoccusLimnobacter, and Romboutsia in GAC systems.
